What's the NRSWA Supervisors course about?
The New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) is the legislation that enables utility companies to place and maintain their apparatus in or on the public highway. It was the follow on legislation from the Public Utilities and Street Works Act 1950.
Streetworks contractors have a responsibility to ensure that their employees are competent in their job. Current legislation requires that at least one operative in each gang is qualified, and that each site is managed by a qualified supervisor.
This course is designed to ensure that supervisors are equipped with the knowledge needed to supervise work in a way that ensures disruption to all road users is minimised as far as possible, the integrity of the highway structure is maintained and that the safety of those using the highway is not compromised.
Areas covered by the course include:
- Monitoring signing lighting and guarding
- Monitoring excavation in the highway
- Monitiring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
- Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base (roadbase) in non-bituminous materials
- Monitoring reinstatement of bituminous materials
- Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs
- Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
This qualification is assessed by observation on the job and oral/written questions.
What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
Successful learners could progress on to management qualifications.
What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
This course is aimed at road excavation supervisors or those aspiring to progress to this role.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the NRSWA Supervisors course?
Completion of the City & Guilds Streetworks Excavation and Reinstatement Certificate for Supervisors enables the holder to acquire the Streetworks Registration Card which enables operatives to work legally on the highways.
